Generative AI has made that possible at low cost and large scale. A user can now build a character that chats all day, create a polished avatar for video, or clone a voice from a short audio sample. In practical terms, identity online is becoming easier to design, duplicate and deploy.

## From profiles to personas

This change is not limited to fraud or disinformation. Many people are using AI in ordinary social life. Some use chatbots as writing partners or social rehearsal tools. Others build fictional characters, customer-facing assistants or always-on online versions of themselves.

Teen use shows how fast this behavior is moving into the mainstream. A recent survey found that about two-thirds of U.S. teens have used AI chatbots, with roughly three in ten saying they use them daily. Separate research on AI companions found that use among teens is already widespread, with many saying these systems can feel emotionally meaningful or easier to talk to than other people.

That matters because identity online is not just about names and login credentials. It is also about presence. If users spend more time talking to systems that sound caring, funny, flirtatious or wise, they may begin to treat those systems less as tools and more as social actors.

## The trust problem grows

At the same time, the same technology can be used to deceive. U.S. consumer protection officials have warned that voice cloning can help scammers impersonate relatives, employees or business leaders. Identity experts and standards bodies are also focusing more closely on deepfakes and so-called injection attacks, in which fake images or video are fed directly into remote verification systems.

That is a serious change for the mechanics of trust online. In earlier years, a verified account, a familiar voice, or a selfie video often carried strong social weight. Today those signals are weaker on their own. New federal identity guidance in the United States now explicitly warns that remote identity proofing can be vulnerable to generative AI and forged media. Industry fraud reports are also showing sharp growth in biometric fraud attempts linked to deepfakes.

The result is an uncomfortable split. AI can help people express themselves more freely, but it can also make evidence of identity less reliable. A face on camera may not prove presence. A natural voice may not prove a speaker. A warm and personal chat may not prove a human mind on the other side.

## Rules begin to catch up

Lawmakers and regulators are starting to respond, though unevenly. In the European Union, the AI Act sets transparency duties for some AI-generated or AI-manipulated content, including deepfakes, with major transparency provisions scheduled to apply from August 2026. The broader direction is clear: users should be told when content or interaction is synthetic in ways that matter to public trust.

In the United States, the response is more fragmented. Consumer protection agencies have focused on impersonation and fraud risks. States are also moving toward stronger disclosure rules for some chatbot uses, especially when bots interact with people in sensitive commercial or emotional settings.

Those efforts address a basic social need: notice. People may accept AI in many areas of life, but they usually still want to know when they are dealing with a machine rather than a person.

## A more layered idea of self

The deeper issue is cultural, not only legal. The internet has always encouraged performance. Social platforms rewarded style, speed and visibility long before generative AI arrived. What AI changes is the scale and autonomy of that performance. A persona can now keep speaking when its owner is asleep. It can be tuned for charm, confidence or intimacy. It can serve as a mask, a helper, a brand extension or a synthetic friend.

That does not mean humanity is disappearing online. It means human identity is being stretched across new tools. In many spaces, people are becoming editors of digital selves rather than sole authors of every word.

The challenge ahead is to preserve meaningful signals of accountability, consent and reality. As AI personas spread, the central question may no longer be whether the internet is human. It may be whether people still have fair ways to know who, or what, they are meeting there.
